Shade and drought increase fungal contribution to partially mycoheterotrophic terrestrial orchids Goodyera pubescens and Tipularia discolor

چکیده

Many photosynthetic plants supplement carbon with fungal carbon, but the mechanisms that govern dependence on mycoheterotrophic are poorly understood. We used exclusion shelters to manipulate water and light availability of terrestrial orchids Goodyera pubescens Tipularia discolor . tracked changes in δ 13 C from photosynthesis 15 N acquired soil-derived inorganic nitrogen versus mycoheterotrophy, along direct measures T. hypothesized shade would increase mycoheterotrophy compared reference plants, while drought decrease both abundance potential mycorrhizal fungi. Drought enriched G. , control indicating increased contribution orchid tissues. Physiological measurements T leaves showed dark respiration, use efficiency, relative electron transport rate did not vary significantly, shaded had greater quantum suggesting they were light-limited. Light saturated was lower drought-treated capacity, likely corresponding enrichment N. This study documented response manipulated environmental conditions. Both mycoheterotrophically derived nitrogen.

The Dynamics of Flowering and Fruit Production in Two Eastern North American Terrestrial Orchids, Tipularia Discolor and Liparis Lilifolia

Liparis lili/olia (L.) Richard and Tipularia discolor (Pursh) Nutall. are common terrestrial orchids in deciduous forests of eastern North America. Although the species have different breeding systems, fruit production in both species is pollinator limited. Liparis is self-incompatible while Tipularia is selfcompatible but anther cap retention promotes outcrossing. Annual variation in the numbe...

Phenology of roots and mycorrhiza in orchid species differing in phototrophic strategy

• The mycorrhiza of orchids represents an energy source that may replace or supplement photosynthesis. Dependency on mycotrophy in adult life stages would thus be expected to be inversely related to the prevalence of phototrophic structures. • The phenology of underground parts and mycorrhizal infection were monitored in five terrestrial species differing in leaf phenology (and thus in phototro...

Orchid-fungus fidelity: a marriage meant to last?

The characteristics of plant-mycorrhizae associations are known to vary in both time and space, but the ecological consequences of variation in the dynamics of plant-fungus interactions are poorly understood. For example, do plants associate with single fungi or multiple fungi simultaneously, and do the associations persist through a plant's lifetime or do plants support a succession of differe...
